GCC Ambassadors Alert UN on Nuclear Threat
GCC Ambassadors Warn UN Nuclear Chief of Risks to Regional Safety Amid Israeli-Iranian Tensions
CAIRO: Ambassadors from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have voiced strong concerns to Rafael Grossi, head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, regarding the safety of nuclear sites near their borders amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, according to a report by Qatar’s state news agency on Saturday.
During a meeting in Vienna, the ambassadors warned Grossi about the “dangerous repercussions” of any military action targeting nuclear facilities. Their warning came shortly after the Israeli military initially claimed it had struck Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility. However, it later retracted the statement, calling it a mistake.
The Bushehr facility, built by Russia, is Iran’s only active nuclear power plant and is located along the Gulf coast — close to many GCC countries. The Gulf states have long feared that any attack on such a site could result in widespread contamination of air and water, posing severe environmental and health risks across the region.
The meeting highlighted the growing anxiety in the Gulf over the fallout from military actions involving sensitive nuclear infrastructure.
