Trump Claims Up to Five Fighter Jets Shot Down in India-Pakistan Conflict

US President Donald Trump stated that up to five fighter jets were shot down during the recent conflict between India and Pakistan, which escalated after an April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir and nearly triggered a full-scale war before a ceasefire in May. Speaking at a White House dinner with Republican lawmakers, Trump mentioned the downing of “five, five, four or five” jets but did not specify which country’s aircraft were involved or provide detailed information.

Pakistan has claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets during the aerial engagements. India acknowledged some air losses on the first day of hostilities but asserted it gained an upper hand before the ceasefire. Indian officials reported shooting down a few Pakistani planes, while Pakistan denied losing any jets but confirmed damage to some of its airbases.

Trump has repeatedly taken credit for brokering the ceasefire, announced via his social media on May 10, following talks held in Washington with both sides. However, India has disputed these claims, maintaining that the truce was achieved through direct bilateral negotiations and rejecting the idea of external intervention in their longstanding dispute.

The conflict followed an April militant attack in Kashmir, blamed by India on Pakistan-based groups, a charge Islamabad denies. After the attack, Indian airstrikes targeted alleged terrorist infrastructure across the border, prompting reciprocal aerial combat that resulted in the reported downing of jets and other casualties until the ceasefire was declared
